In a time where it seem like managers, directors, VPs, and C-suite roles are the king of them all, Facebook reminds us that it doesn't have to be. True success is when you tap into a role that makes you happy and truthfully, one that you're good at.
I'm often reminded of this as I manage my own company. Even though I'm a founder, I don't have to also become the CEO and the president and whatever other arbitrary higher up roles I can name for myself.
As founder, I have a vision. From there, I do what I do best -- which is teaching fitness classes, marketing my business, and continuing to develop the bigger picture. For finances, accounting, and a whole bunch of other things that are too complicated for me to wrap my head around, I hire talented and inspiring people to lead.
It's a simple process that makes complete sense -- allow people to thrive where they can and allow others to step in if that's their calling. If everyone is playing to their strengths at work, can you imagine how much more harmonious it would be?
In addition to hiring managers that are supporters, look for these other tried-and-true characteristics and strengths to ensure a happy team:
Team Player
When things get hard, having a manager who can get along and see things from everyone's point of view will create a feeling of inclusion. Ask candidates questions about what role they tend to play in team projects and how they handle situations when the team disagrees on a topic.
Open-Minded
Having a leader that is open to different viewpoints, new training, and quick change will lead to better transitions during critical moments. To spot this in an applicant, ask them how they deal with news of last-minute changes in a time-sensitive project and look for answers of quick thinking, open communication, and non-resistance.
Encouraging
Everyone leans into encouragement differently. Though some like to play hardball, having a manager that can encourage the team to do better, reach higher, or simply believe in themselves will reap long-term benefits.
Learn more about a candidate's encouraging nature by asking them, "Who is someone who looks up to you and why?" It's a great way to get people comfortable with recognizing their own achievement, hearing how they've positively impacted others, and connecting on a more human level.
Truth-oriented
There will be times when things will get tough. Work that isn't good enough will get turned in. The latest project's results will lead to plummeting figures.
You have to be good at delivering this news and following it up with action-oriented steps. Good managers can drive home the news that things are not performing up to par while motivating the team to reach bigger goals.
Although this isn't an easy one to spot, look for this in candidates by showing them one of your company's products and asking them, "How could this product be better?"
